here comes a
Proposal for an
Action Day on Seed-Sovereignty
against the planned EU-statutes for seeds
in Brussels on 17 April 2011.
Tens of thousands of people in many European countries stood up for the variety of seeds in the hands of peasants/peasant women, gardeners/gardener women: with their signatures, by means of participation in “Sowing the Future”- actions or by preservation of rural or local varieties. Thus, they interfered in the reformation of EU-legislation concerning seeds and opposed the plans of seed industry and its confederates in the administrative boards, who in the long run want to get under control seeds worldwide.
Together with many others we – the organisers of the seed campaign – will try to make clear this interference to the European public as well as to the European institutions by means of a campaign taking place in Brussels on Sunday, 17th of April, the day of the farmers resistance and Monday 18th April next year.
Our conception of April 17th and 18th 2011 in Brussels:
- Rally or manifestation through Brussels to the locations of seed industries and the respective lobby organisations, including information as to companies and their efforts, using giant dolls and various other elements creating a great stir,
- Demonstration including theatrical performance with international guests, description of the situation in various countries,
- Delivery of signatures to representatives of the EU-commission as well as of the EU-parliament, respectively to representatives of the appropriate committees of the parliament and of the central managements.
Of course, these ideas may be extended by further elements. Perhaps some people want to organize a seed market, others perhaps may want to draw attention to the threatening developments by forms of civil insubordination.
We are looking for support and confederates!
- Who can come to Brussels together with us on April 17th, 2011 and some days before to prepare the campaign?
- Who is in or near Brussels and can locally support the preparation of the campaign?
- Who would like to take part in concretizing the above ideas and bring in his/her own ideas and actions?
- Who has got information about companies of seed industry and its organisations, resident in Brussels and influencing EU-politics?
- Who can within his/her own connections -national or international- mobilize people for the campaign in Brussels and perhaps for related campaigns in other European cities?
With this campaign in Brussels we want to draw the attention of the public to the relationship between the planned legislation concerning seeds in Europe and the worldwide destruction of rural agriculture.
We hope for the cooperation of all groups that in various European countries took part in the campaign “Sowing the Future – Harvesting Diversity”. We also hope for the support of all people who critically are concerned with the European seed companies and of those, who are opposing GMO.
We look for a lively interest to defend and gain back the rights of peasants and gardeners to keep, to re-sow, exchange and sell their own seeds.
